The Symmetry of Sailing: The Physics of Sailing for Yachtsmen
Published in Hardcover by Adlard Coles (December, 1987)
Authors: Ross Garrett and Dave Wilkie
Average review score:

good book
good book for the intermediate and expert in yacht design/construction and yachting who wants to check the knowledge.

Outshines by far any book on the topic of sailing theory.
While written some 12 years ago this book is as fresh as a daisy. Some of the topics are still breathtaking in their implications for the future of sailing such as sailing dead downwind faster than the wind.

Already practical yachts have sailed straight into the wind, and it just awaits the technology to acheive this down wind trick.

As well there are straight forward guides as to how to handle a yacht in the real world of racing, as well as sobering discussions on the effects of breaking seas.

All in all it has made me a far more aware sailor with the knowledge to plan for exciting sailing and future fun.

Too Many Magicians
Published in Paperback by Ace Books (July, 1983)
Author: Randall Garrett
Average review score:

A wonderful amalgamation
I love Garrett's Lord Darcy books. They combine elements of mystery, fantasy, and alternative history in a very imaginative mixture. I originally read "Too Many Magicians" many years ago. I just reread it, and to my delight spotted the characters of Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin(who is named Lord Bontriomphe). I wasn't familar with Rex Stout the first time I read the book and delighted in spotting the items borrowed(lovingly) from Stout - The red leather chair, the large globe, the painting(not a picture) of the waterfall, his obsession with herbs(not orchids.

It is an excellent combination of magic and deduction.
Set in an alternate world where science is just a dream and the laws of magic are real, Lord Darcy, chief Investiagtor for the Duke of Normandy, and his chief forensic magician, Master Sean, are in action again. They become involved in a case concerning National Security, black magic, adventure, international intrigue and, of course, murder.

Who murdered one of the preminent magicians of the realm at the annual Magicians Convention? To find out, you'll have to read it and it's a page turner all the way. So settle back for a fast, twisted, tangled mystery that will leave you guessing until the last.

An Unspeakable Betrayal: Selected Writings of Luis Bunuel
Published in Paperback by University of California Press (April, 2002)
Authors: Luis Bunuel, Garrett White, and Jean Carriere
Average review score:

Sublime
The "return" of the master. Although not as good of a read, imho, as MY LAST SIGH, this is still required reading for Bunuel fans, and still retains all of the great artist's power, humor, and insight. In an era of big bucks and ready-made food, it stands out like a whale among minnows.

Finally, these writings are available
This is a wonderful and funny collection of surreal writings from one of the greatest filmmakers of all time. Many of the earlier, surreal writings by Bunuel, written when he was with the Surrealists in France, are imaginative and funny. There is also the complete collection of poetry originally titled An Andulsian Dog, which is surprisingly strong. The criticisms by Bunuel, along with the autobiographical material, offer insight to his aesthetic beliefs and his thinking. There are also snatches of the last screenplay on which he was working before he died in addition to the original screenplay for Andulsian Dog and a Hollywood treatment for an unrealized film GOYA. Overall, this is a big treasure for those who love Bunuel and who have been anxiously awaiting to read his hard to find pieces. It is a great companion to Bunuel's MY LAST SIGN.

Warping All by Yourself

Author: Cay Garrett
Average review score:

This book is good for begining as well as advanced weavers
Beginers will learn about the set up of a hand loom and more experienced weavers will see the advantages this method of dressing a loom.

This book takes a weaver step by step through the warping of a loom. It is easy to understand and the method discussed works! I have noticed that setting up a project is easier and the results are better.

For Beginning weavers, this is a must!
Cary Carrett's concise, easy to read and follow instructions for warping a loom without help is all a beginning weaver needs to get off to a great start. Complete with diagrams and step by step description of her method, which works, by the way, this one book provides the solution to the problems which tend to block our enjoyment of weaving. For beginning weavers, it is a must!

The World Encyclopedia of Locomotives
Published in Hardcover by Raincoast Book Dist Ltd (September, 1997)
Author: Colin Garrett
Average review score:

Excellent RailRoad (trains) book
This book includes photos (or drawings if pre-1800s) of every major train (all countries) from the 1600s to present. It includes specifications, history, charts, and more.
If you can buy only one book on Locomotives (trains specifically) this is a good choice.
This book is specifically on trains, not rail (routes).

XLNT RR Locomotive Book w/ Photos, specs, and History
This excellent book is great for Railroad hobbiests, RR History, and for MS Train Simulator (and other train simulators) users.
This book includes every major class of train from the 1600's till present. It includes photos, specifications (date, builder, client, gauge, class, driving wheels, capacity, weight, max speeds, etc), and history.
You can most likely find this book (even hard cover) for $10 on line and in Major Book Stores.
This book is too good NOT to add to your RailRoad Library.
If you have NO books on locomotives and can buy only one, this is a good choice.

Adventures in the Supernormal
Published in Paperback by Parapsychology Foundation (19 March, 2002)
Author: Eileen J. Garrett
Average review score:

A Must Read for Anyone Who's Interested in the Paranormal
For anyone interested in paranormal phenomena, this is a great book for you. Eileen J. Garrett founded the Parapsychology Foundation (based in New York City) in 1951. The Parapsychology Foundation is a non-profit organization that supports the scientific exploration of psychic phenomena and still exists today. This book is her autobiography. There is so much mystery surrounding psychics, and Adventures in the Supernormal is a very insightful look into the life of someone with psychic powers.

Garrett knew at a young age that she was different. In her preface she writes, "I have a gift, a capacity--a delusion, if you will--which is called 'psychic.'...living with and utilizing this psychic capacity long ago inured me to a variety of epithets...In short, I have been called many things: from a charlatan to a miracle woman. I am, at least, neither of these. In this book I hope to tell the reader what I am. It is an answer to literally hundreds of requests for information concerning supernormal perception and how it functions."

She begins with her Irish childhood, where she was "exhausted in a world that did not understand or believe" her and continues on through her life to tell of her marriage, her businesses (she was a smart, entrepreneurial woman in a time when that wasn't very common), her divorce, and her move to New York. Garrett was one of the first people to objectively study parapsychology and in her lifetime she made huge contributions to psychic research. She clears up "psychic research" by saying that it's not "spiritualism" or "religion," but rather, it's the "scientific study of the human personality beyond the threshold of what man calls his conscious mind." Her book covers her experience with and knowledge of ESP, clairvoyance, psychometry, telepathy and precognition, and she emphasizes the need for more objective study and research, with an eventual unification of science and religion - a necessary development if we want to truly understand and express psychic powers.

Adventures in the Supernormal is an intriguing look into one of America's primary and highly regarded psychics, and I recommend it to anyone who has an interest in paranormal phenomena.

Angelo the Naughty One

Author: H. Garrett

blast from the past
When I was a little boy in the early '60's my family moved around a lot. One day on my first visit to a new school the principal took me to my classroom to meet the teacher and the kids. The teacher was reading this book to the class. Since my name is Angelo it freaked me out, and I'll never forget that day. The book itself is a run of the mill children's story I guess.

The Art of Playing Mythos the Cthulhu Collectable Card Game: A Tome of Arcane Knowledge
Published in Paperback by Chaosium (January, 2003)
Authors: Scott David Aniolowski, Charlie Krank, Eric Rowe, Lynn Willis, Salvatore Abbinanti, Chris Adams, Thomas Garrett Adams, Stephen Barnwell, Mike Blanchard, and Mark J. Ferrari
Average review score:

A Guide to Playing the Mythos Card Game
This book contains miscellaneous information about the Mythos collectible card game. It contains: the rules of the game, a FAQ, a short play and deck construction guide, a sort of designer's notes on the game, background information on selected cards, rules for solitaire play and creating your own adventures, a complete spoiler list for the limited edition of the game and lists of card attributes and requirements for completing adventures.

As a collector and player of the game, I found the designer's notes on the history of the game and the design philosophy to be especially interesting. Also useful to me are the short notes on the background of selected cards and the rules for creating and scoring your own adventures. The pictures of the selected cards are black & white with a paragraph of background info. Buyers should also note that there is an updated version of the rules of the game at the Chaosium website.

At Home: The American Family, 1750-1870
Published in Hardcover by Harry N Abrams (March, 1998)
Author: Elisabeth Donaghy Garrett
Average review score:

This book brings life to historic homes
At Home gives detailed descriptions of the daily routine "behind the scenes" for families and houses from 1750-1870. This book provides valuable background for understanding the lives of people who inhabited the historic homes that I take my interior design students to visit. We can appreciate the objects, furniture, and furnishings much more when we realize how they were used and how much work it took to maintain them!
